Deep-Ocean Crusts as Telescopes: Using Live Radioisotopes to Probe Supernova Nucleosynthesis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Live 60Fe has recently been detected in a deep-ocean ferromanganese crust, isolated in layers dating from about 3 Myr ago. Since 60Fe has a mean life of 2.2 Myr, a nearEarth supernova is the only likely source for such a signal, and we explore here the consequences of a supernova origin. We combine the 60Fe data with several supernova nucleosynthesis models to calculate the supernova distance as a function of progenitor mass, finding an allowed range of 15− 120 pc. We also predict the signals expected for several other radioisotopes, which are independent of the supernova distance. Species likely to be present near or above background levels are 10Be, 26Al, 53Mn, 182Hf and 244Pu. Of these, 182Hf and 244Pu are nearly background-free, presenting the best opportunities to provide strong confirmation of the supernova origin of the 60Fe signal, and to demonstrate that at least some supernovae are the source for the r-process. The accuracies of our predictions are hampered by large uncertainties in the predicted 60Fe yields for supernovae of different masses, so the new crust data motivate a redoubled theoretical attack on this problem. Gamma-ray Line Astronomy *
Gamma-ray lines from radioactive isotopes, ejected into interstellar space by cosmic nucleosynthesis events, are observed with new space telescopes. The Compton Observatory had provided a sky survey for the isotopes 26 Al, detecting supernova radioactivity and the diffuse glow of long-lived radioactivity from massive stars in the Galaxy. High-resolution spectroscopy is now being exploited with ...
متن کاملMeasuring Cosmic Elements with Gamma-Ray Telescopes
Gamma-ray telescopes are capable of measuring radioactive trace isotopes from cosmic nucleosynthesis events. Such measurements address new isotope production rather directly for a few key isotopes such as Ti, Al, Fe, and Ni, as well as positrons from the β-decay variety. Experiments of the past decades have now established an astronomy with γ-ray lines, which is an important part of the study o...
متن کاملFe AS A FOSSIL OF A NEAR-EARTH SUPERNOVA
Live Fe has recently been reported in a deep-ocean ferromanganese crust. Analysis of the isotopic ratios in the sample suggests that the measured Fe abundance exceeds the levels generated by terrestrial and cosmogenic sources, and it has been proposed that the excess of Fe is a signature of a supernova that exploded near the earth several Myr ago. In this paper, we consider the possible backgro...
متن کاملElectron-capture Supernovae as Sources of 60 Fe
We investigate the nucleosynthesis of the radionuclide Fe in electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). The nucleosynthetic results are based on a self-consistent, two-dimensional simulation of an ECSN as well as models in which the densities are systematically increased by some factors (low-entropy models). Fe is found to be appreciably made in neutron-rich ejecta during the nuclear quasiequilibrium...
متن کاملResearch of Six−legged Walking Robot For Use in Ocean Crust Mining
It is important to establish an appropriate transporting machine on the seafloor for deep ocean mining of cobalt-rich manganese crusts, as the physiognomy of cobalt-rich manganese crusts is complex and often varies. In view of the complexity of terrain of cobalt-rich manganese crusts and huge weight that need to be supported during ocean mining, a project of the six−legged walking robot driven ...
